What I’ve learned today about videogames: Geoff Keighley should take a nap, SPORTS SPORTS SPORTS, Call of Duty mocapped a dog, no backwards compatibility, games automatically download to your HD so no used games/borrowing games from friends.

Oh my god I'm glad I'm not the only one who's completely apathetic about puzzle platformers. It reminds me of how Half-Life 2 came out and for a while, every FPS had to have a bunch of half-assed Physics puzzles.

Amazon gives away a free mobile app everyday for Android and I feel 7/10 times it’s some kind of physics-based puzzle game that uses the accelerometer to move a box across the screen into a hole. And then the next level is the same level but with a platform in the middle that makes it so you actually have to tilt the phone. And then each subsequent level adds spikes so that it creates this artificial difficulty for the sake of it being hard instead of being a challenge.

This may have turned into a completely different rant but I’m just tired of the same thing. If there’s going to be a shooter, make it not be Call of Duty or Halo. If you’re going to make a platformer, make sure that the controls are tight and responsive instead just adding some puzzle element just to have a puzzle element. If you want to make a physics-based game DON’T JUST MAKE ANGRY BIRDS, THROW SOME OTHER CHARACTERS OVER IT AND CALL IT DAY. Use the physics for something interesting.

I love videogames. But I am not particularly excited for the next round of consoles because they only thing they keep touting are “BETTER GRAPHICS! SOCIAL MEDIA!” and while better graphics would be a cool thing TO LOOK AT, there’s been no such talk of gameplay improvements. There just seems to be an extension of the continuing trend that games need to be darker and grittier and futuristic and boom bang shoot laser guns pow pow. Now I’m not gonna lie and say I don’t enjoy first person shooters (I really only enjoy about 2 of them), I’d prefer to see something that more creative than “Gruff white guy blasts through war torn place”. Even if it’s just another FPS, at least make it something creative. TF2, Borderlands, Bulletstorm are all FPSes but at least they have some sort of personality to them.

I would love to see a revitalization of platformers. And not just in the indie game community. I always see some sort of new indie platformer popping up in an indie game bundle and it’s just “HEY, here’s a puzzle platformer where you play a little kid and he has to rescue his world from a thing and blah blah blah blah blah” BORED.

I know companies follow trends. So they keep making FPSes because no matter how boring or mediocre it is, people are going to buy it because hey CALLOFDUTYHALOBATTLEFIELD (i know Battlefield is third person shut up). And I know indie developers are going to keep making puzzle platformers because Cave Story and Braid, but please for the love of all things, just try to be creative. And creative doesn’t necessarily means original. Double Dragon Neon is far from original (we won’t get into the history of Double Dragon), but I love that game because it’s steeped in 80’s nostalgia and it’s highly capable brawler.

This is all probably VERY rambling but I’ll break it down into some points

More colors. Not everything needs to be grey and brown and the only color I get is when your character uses night vision and everything turns green.
Please please please don’t shove social media down our throats. I don’t have my 360 connected to my Facebook for a reason. Everyone I know on Facebook isn’t always a “friend” or even an “acquaintance”, they’re usually someone I “met once” or “have vague recollection of”. So I don’t need randos on Facebook or Twitter on my friends list. Because they are not friends. They are randos.
Please focus on gameplay. Because good graphics doesn’t equal good gameplay. Example: Fable 3. Fable 3 looks good, it has a unique art style that you can recognize as Fable. But I would rather throw D&D minifigs at each other than play that game. It would be more fun and more rewarding.

Future Draw Friends Ideas

I have two new ideas for show on the Draw Friends youtube channel.

The first is Fan Fiction Theater.

I would pick a few fan fictions for friends to read and I’d have them draw their characters from the story.

Secondly, Draw Rivals.

Two artists would face off head to head to draw suggestions and have the audience vote on who did the best. The winner would get… nothing probably. Just a fun thing to do.

What do you guys think?

I've been doing cardio for 2 weeks now. 30 minutes a day. 5 days a week.
